"Why Have There Been No Great Net Artists"

Erica Buehler (not sure if this is working)

What I found most interesting about the Steve Dietz article is the section titled "The 'Problem' Problem," which basically discusses that one of the main issues with "great net art" is accessibility--more so that people are lazy/demand immediate gratification as opposed to the art actually being accessible. This section is satirical in nature, listing the "problems" with net art ("it takes too long...it's too expensive...all those plug-ins"), and while the author's point about our patriarchal society being more to blame for the "lack" of great net artists is the strongest, I think it's important to note that, because net art isn't simply some paint on a canvas hung up on a wall for everyone to see, it's devalued. It requires a little more effort, a little more appreciation (as someone who has created different kinds of digital art, I can appreciate the time and effort that goes into creating net art), and more understanding and acceptance as an art form. Still, like every new and blossoming art form, it takes time for people to get used to and appreciate.
